Volkswagen Motorsport has been counting down to the 2010 Dakar Rally by releasing a series of promotional tidbits pertaining to the upcoming rally.The 2010 edition of "The World's Toughest Race" will start on New Year's Day in Buenos Aires and end on January 16 in the same city. This year, the route will measure 9,000km. Four of the 14 legs of the race will run through the Atacama Desert. There will also be two crossings of the Andes at altitudes of about 4,700m. The definite look of the 32th edition of the legendary Dakar in Argentina and Chile was officially unveiled in Paris on November 24, 2009.Aprilia has revealed that it will be backing Team Giofil’s specially-prepared RXV 4.5 in the 2010 Dakar rally.
The motorcycle has already notched up a 450-class win in both the 2008 and 2009 Rally of the Pharoahs, as well as third overall in 2009.
Four bikes will compete in the 2010 Dakar (slightly confusingly, now run in South America).
The four machines are based on off-the-shelf MXV 4.5 enduro bikes, but extensively modified to deal with 16 days of hard riding from January 1 to January 17 2010.VW iPhone App on 2010 Dakar Rally Keeps Users up to Speed .Volkswagen on Friday helped to rev up coverage of the upcoming 2010 Dakar Rally with word that it has launched a new iPhone application in time for the event. The new application will keep users informed of the five Race Touraeg vehicles participating in the off-road classic. The 2010 rally runs through Argentina and Chile, running twice across the Andes Mountains and the Atacama desert. One could argue that the name "Dakar" is a trifle misleading, then.

Dakar. Like marathon, the name has become so epic that it describes not just a place--which for the second consecutive year the rally will not go anywhere near--but an entire event.
The 31st Dakar Rally is not as much of a leap into the dark as the 2009 event, held in South America for the first time because of terrorist threats in Africa. Butt as always it contains a number of imponderables. One of the biggest differences of the 2010 event, which gets underway from Buenos Aires on Friday, Jan. 1, is that there will be no Mitsubishi, following the Japanese company’s decision to withdraw from cross country rallying due to the ongoing economic crisis.
