The New Year is only moments away, and every fresh calendar starts with the biggest off-road race on the planet – the Dakar Rally. This will be the second year in a row that the historic African event is held on the South American continent as it runs through Argentina and Chile. The season leading up to the 2010 rally has been full of big announcements and so we embark on another decade of Dakar racing with an event that could reshape the sport as we know it.
Fourteen competitive sections and close to 3,000 flat-out miles stand between 368 competitors and possible victory on the 2010 Dakar, which starts from Buenos Aires, Argentina today January the 1st, 2010
The positive energy within the Volkswagen team is evident one day before the 2010 Dakar Rally’s ceremonial start. Volkswagen fields five Race Touareg cars in the legendary desert classic starting on 1 January in Buenos Aires and which runs for 9,000 kilometres through Argentina and Chile. Last year’s winner Giniel de Villiers, Carlos Sainz and their team-mates are "Dakar” ready immediately before the start of the acid test comprising of notorious Pampa, pitiless Atacama Desert and two Andes crossings plus the atmospheric start on today, January the 1st, 2010, New Year’s Day.
