National Park of Lanin - February/March 2010
The Volcano Lanin: 3,747 m (12,293 ft)
Within the park is located the famous Lanín volcano, with its cone shape and snowy top. Lanín volcano is surrounded by beauty in the form of lakes, valleys and mountains, of which you can obtain a panoramic view from the refuges. The ascent of one of the most attractive, mythical and challenging Andean massifs in Patagonia. An unforgettable experience to explore oneself. Anyway we didn't have enough time so we took the 8 hours trekking to the base of the Lanin. Compositionally, volcanic rocks from Lanín Volcano are mainly basalts/basaltic andesites and dacites with scarce intermediate types. Postglacial pyroclastic deposits are also silicic and confirm a sharp bimodality of the magmas.
Its summit reaches 3,747 m a.s.l. and is 2,500 m above the surrounding ground level. It covers an area of about 220 km2
with an estimated volume of ca. 180 km3. Lanín volcano has a near conical shape with steep slopes partially covered by glaciers.
