Buenos Aires Architecture
Buenos Aires features many architectural wonders in a number of different styles. Architectural delights. Architecture By 1900 Buenos Aires was one of the twelve world capitals with finest architecture. In terms of growing, Buenos Aires was the third most growing city behind Hamburg and Chicago. Wander the neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and it's hard not to wonder about the mix of architecture. The house next door, the corner pizza parlor, even parking garages have features that tickle the curiosity.
The main European style prevailing throughout those years was to be complemented during the early 20s with innovative styles such as Art nouveau and Art Deco, as well as an aesthetic highly influenced by the archeological discoveries from way back then: Tutankhamen’s tomb discovery and the later discovery of Inca, Mayan and Aztec archeological remains inspired much of the design work. Rectangles and pyramids, double and triple frames and Egyptian and Inca motifs are yet to be found and admired through several barrios that were growing back then, Flores, Caballito and Balvanera.
The Architecture of Argentina can be said to start at the beginning of the Spanish colonisation, though it was in the 18th century that the cities of the country reached their splendour. The simplicity of the Rioplatense baroque style can be clearly appreciated in Buenos Aires, in the works of several Italian architects. Italian and French influences increased after the wars for independence at the beginning of the 19th century.
Three styles dominate the neighborhoods of Buenos Aires: neoclassical, art nouveau and art deco.
Buenos Aires’ architecture is very ecclectic, reflecting its different historical time periods and various cultural influences.
In many parts of the city the different architectural styles blend together, whereas certain neighborhoods are characterized by a specific style.
The best way to appreciate the city’s architectural beauties is to stroll through certain areas and look upwards to observe the details of ornate facades, domes and towers.
Among the qualities that make Buenos Aires a unique and marvellous city is the incredible contrast in architectural styles. From the humble and multicoloured houses of La Boca to the colonial style of San Telmo (which seems to take you a step back in time),from the fabulous palaces of Retiro and Avenida Alvear, to the impressive and modern towers of Puerto Madero and Catalinas Norte.
